The Emancipation Proclamation
The Emancipation Proclamation was issued by Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863. The Emancipation stated that all slaves in the Confederate states, excluding the border states, were made free. It changed the motive of the war which previously was state's rights but Abraham Lincoln, sensing that if external countries such as France or Great Britain helped America, the Union would never win. He then changed the motive by issuing the Emancipation Proclamation and because of the change in motive, European powers could not support the South because slavery was illegal in their country.
