Battle of Antietam
On the date of September 17, 1862 the bloodiest battle in the entire Civil War occurred. The battle of Antietam was between the Confederate forces commanded by General Robert E. Lee and the Union forces which were commanded by General George B. McClellan. 23,000 soldiers lay wounded and 3,654 soldiers lay dead. The Union claimed victory because the Confederate troops retreated but overall, neither side was the clear winner. This battle took place in Antietam Creek, Sharpsburg, Maryland. This has a great significance too the Civil War by that not only was it the most bloody battle, it inspired and motivated Abraham Lincoln to pass the Emancipation Proclamation.
